Meet our four-legged friends in the Rothschild Yard ...

At the National Horse Racing Museum, one of our biggest attractions is our majestic live racehorses. Visitors can meet and greet our horses, and learn about how to retrain a racehorse in our behind the scenes tours at 11 am and 2:30 pm.

The horses are always on regular rotation as they stay with us for a few months before moving onto new homes after their racing careers or even go back to their owners. Find out more about our current equine residents ….

Penhill is our stable star, winning 12 out of his 32 starts – including two races at the Cheltenham Festival in 2017 and 2018!

Penhill started his career on the flat, trained by James Bethell. He raced for James as a 2  and 3-year-old, winning 3 out of his 12 starts. He then moved to Luca Cumani for his 4-year-old season and won a further 2 races on the flat.

In 2016 Penhill moved to trainer Willie Mullins and found his true talent in hurdling. He won his first race over hurdles in a Maiden at Tramore, ridden by Paul Townend. He then went on to win a further 4 races during his first year over hurdles, including the Grade 2 Guinness Novice Hurdle at Limerick after finishing 4th in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse.

Penhill started 2017 by winning the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March before finishing second in the Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival.

In 2018 Penhill lined up again at the Cheltenham Festival in the Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle and won by 2 lengths to Supasundae. He then headed to the Punchestown Festival where he was second again, this time in the Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle behind Faugheen!

After a career-ending injury, he is our star guest at the National Horse Racing Museum to recuperate and ‘meet & greet’ our visitors.

Flexible Flyer

Flexi is an 11-year-old gelding who was trained by Chris Dwyer until he retired in 2018. He had a very successful career, winning 4 out of his 32 races and was placed in a further 9 races.

Flexi raced from 5 furlongs to 7 furlongs and even raced over a mile but he only won over the distances of 6 & 7 furlongs. All of his wins came on the turf, winning at Haydock, Brighton, Thirsk and Warwick. However, he was placed in half his runs on the All-Weather surfaces at Lingfield, Chelmsford, Kempton and Wolverhampton.

Flexi is a lovely and friendly horse who is now ready to begin his retraining at the National Horse Racing Museum. Do come and see him if you get the chance, we are open six days a week with two behind the scenes tours per day.

Swissie is a 5-year-old gelding who retired from racing in March 2018 at the age of 3.

Trained by Ivan Furtado, Swissie won 1 out of his 6 starts in a handicap over 5 furlongs at Newcastle Racecourse in January 2018.

He then finished 3rd two weeks later at Wolverhampton before finishing 5th in his last race a month later. He loved racing but, unfortunately, picked up an injury and was retired. After a two year break, he is here at the NHRM in Newmarket to start his retraining, our ‘behind the scenes tours’, where you can meet the horses take place Tuesday to Sunday at 11.00am and 2.30pm each day.
